Dr Miedema is an expert on the local environment. His research focuses on effects of noise, including noise annoyance and self-reported sleep disturbance, and effects of combined exposures, and provided the basis for regulations and procedures for evaluating environmental impacts in the Netherlands. He has been the leader of many interdiciplinary projects concerning the description of environmental exposures, and associated health risks and community effects. He manages a large international database with data on noise/effects and is the leader of the projects in which these data are analysed. He has extensive experience with the application of scientific knowledge for practical problems. He is closely involved in the development of environmental assessment procedures for situation where noise plays an important role, e.g. for environmental zoning around complex industrial sites, or for the evaluation of the impact of large scale infrastructural projects (extension of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, new high speed railway line HSL, new freight railway line Betuweroute, new motorways). He is the first author of the background study on Environment and Health in the Netherlands commissioned by the ministery of Public Health with a view to the WHO Environment and Health Conference, London, 1999. He assists the development of a new noise policy in the Netherlands and in the EU by providing expertise on noise metrics, noise effects, monitoring, and dose/effects relationships to the Netherlands government and to EU/DG Environment.
