Experience / Expertise

  • psycho-physiological investigations of jet-lag and shift work in terms of sleep (elecrophysiologically defined sleep stages) and circadian rhythm disturbance.
  • field studies to assess the degree of sleep disturbance due to aircraft noise around the main UK airports.
  • assessing the noise nuisance and sleep disturbance, annoyance and complaint (particularly to noise) in communities close to airports
    • the effects of alcohol, exercise, aircraft noise, fibromyalgia and obstructive sleep apnoea on the circadian and sleep stage structure
    • the cause and consequence of sleep disturbance and arousals
    • interaction of loud music and social drugs in young adults.

Collaborations

Many research projects have been done in collaboration with other research groups and institutions: Physiology Department at Manchester Medical School, Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Civil Aviation Authority (UK), Loughborough University, Laboratory of Environmental Physiology and Psychology in Strasbourg, Manchester Airport, Department of Respiratory Medicine at Wythenshawe Hospital and the Rheumatic Diseases Unit at Trafford General Hospital.
